It is not a secret that deforestation is one of the main causes of climate change, and it is happening in Ghana at an alarming speed. Lots of trees are being cut down every day all over the country. Whether it is for firewood or to clear the land for construction or agriculture. Whatever the reason for deforestation is, it is devastating for the environment. This highlights the need for reforestation efforts in Ghana, as with every tree cut down, many animals lose their homes, the chance of floods and droughts increases, and the climate change crisis gets bigger and bigger. The worst part about this is that those who cut down trees know all this perfectly well and yet still do it.
Of course, there are times when it is necessary to cut down trees. Whether it is for pest control, safety concerns, forest management purposes or economic needs. However, the most important thing in this case is to make sure the land is being reforested at a bigger or at least the same speed it is being deforested.
CoDA is taking reforestation very seriously and is working extremely hard every day to make Kongo and other locations in Ghana a greener place. That is why in July we visited the Forestry Commission in Bolgatanga to ask for tree seedlings. Not only did they welcome us extremely warmly, but also, they satisfied our request more than we could anticipate. We want to express our sincere gratitude to them for donating 500 tree seedlings.
We first gave away some trees to the community in Kongo and educated them on the importance of taking care of the trees once they are planted, supporting our reforestation efforts in Ghana. With a big number of animals roaming around in Kongo, it is always dangerous to leave tree seedlings unprotected. The remaining trees were gifted to various schools in Nabdam district.
