CoDA Organised climate change competition

Climate change is an incredibly serious issue that has been affecting majority of the countries around the globe significantly. Ghana is no exception, as locals are dealing with issues such as unpredictable rain patterns, heavier weather events, floodings and other problems caused by climate change. There are lots of things that can be done to solve those problems or at least reduce them, but it needs to be done now, otherwise it is going to be too late. We can all contribute in simple ways. Individual can for example reduce the amount of plastic or electricity we use, recycle plastic items, reuse old clothes or household items instead of buying new ones. We can walk more or use public transport instead of using motorcycles or private cars to go around. And of course, we can and we must plant trees.

CoDA believes that educating the youth on the importance of living environmentally friendly is another efficient way to tackle climate change crisis. That is why CoDA members have been working hard to arrange climate change courses in local schools, so that our youth would understand the fact that climate change is also their problem and responsibility.

CoDA organized a climate change competition for students from three schools in Nabdam District (Kongo JHS, GIrls Model and Presentation JHS), following a climate change course taught by our volunteer in June and July. The students demonstrated impressive knowledge and enthusiasm for environmental conservation. The competition aimed to empower students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address climate change challenges.

The prizes awarded to the schools are vital in supporting their environmental initiatives. The seedlings will be planted around their schools, promoting biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and serving as a natural windbreak to protect the schools from wind storms. The cash prizes will enable schools to implement climate change projects, such as recycling programs. The educational materials, including books, pens, math sets, drawing books, and color pencils, will enhance students’ learning experiences and foster creativity. The climate change t-shirts will serve as a reminder of the importance of environmental stewardship.

The students’ eagerness to learn and participate was evident throughout the competition. They showcased their understanding of climate change causes, effects, and solutions. Their confidence and creativity were inspiring, and we are proud to support their environmental education.

Congratulations to the students on their good performance, and we are confident that they will become future leaders in the fight against climate change, making a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
